Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, Milestones Transitions Program bring special education students and elders together

JAMAICA PLAIN – Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly (LBFE), Boston Chapter, has embarked on an exciting summer collaboration with Waltham-based Milestones Day School & Transitions Program. Students from Milestones are joining residents at three Boston senior housing sites for weekly activities ranging from Bingo to a Tech Cafe. The three locations highlight the diversity of Boston-area seniors, with students visiting with native Chinese and Russian speakers, lifelong Bostonians, and formerly homeless elders. Students and seniors are overcoming language and cultural barriers to form friendships across the generations.

According to Cynthia Wilkerson, Program Manager at LBFE, “It’s remarkable how effortlessly connections form between the students and elders! We couldn’t be more pleased to be bringing these two groups together.”

“At Milestones we believe that our students are highly capable individuals who will gain vital skills they need to be successful when provided the right environment and tailored learning opportunities. We believe that collaboration is critical, and we feel privileged for our successful partnerships with Milestones’ parents, districts, and community agencies such as Little Brothers who all play a tremendous role in working with us to best support our students’ achievement.”  – Kim Rockers, CEO

About Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, Boston Chapter (LBFE – Boston)

LBFE — Boston was founded in 1979 as part of a national network of non-profit volunteer-based organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly in Greater Boston. Our motto, flowers before bread, reflects our belief that living is more than a roof over our heads and food on the table, but also the presence of people who care. Staff and over 1,500 volunteers, provide companionship, support and care to over 800 elders seventy and over without the benefit of family or adequate social contacts. Priority is given to those living independently at, or below the poverty line, without charge and without regard to race, gender, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation. LBFE – Boston is a 501(c)(3) operating solely with the support of individual donors, volunteers and foundation or corporate assistance. For more information, visit www.littlebrothersboston.org.
